SeungYoung Yu / A embarrassing incident / Wed 11AM

My first class as a teacher

I can still remember a small incident that helped me relax on my first day of teaching in a academy a few years ago. I was twenty-four years old at the time, and I had not graduated from university. The practice teaching that I had done for 3 years was very different from teaching my own class. When I walked into the room, I was very nervous. I carefully put my books down on the dest. Then I heard a girl say something in Korean to another classmate. I speak Korean, so I understood her perfectly when she told her friend to look at my hands. She said "Look how his hands are trembling," and she was right. Neither of the two girls knew that I could hear that. When I smiled a little, the first girl started to laugh because she realized at that mement that I heard that. It seems like such a silly thing now, but the humor of the incident really helped me relax on the first day of my career.

Jung Min / Meeting Family Matters / Introduction to English Writing(1), Wednesday 11a.m.

Meeting Family Matters

When I think about my childhood, I could only think up about playing with my friends or throwing tantrums at my parents to buying me a shiny new toy. Although a bit embarrasing, those thoughts consisted of 90 percent of my childhood memories, except for one incident which was the time I met the cast of my favorite TV show, Family Matters. This TV show was a popular family sitcom and to be honest, if you were a 90's kid and living in America, there was no chance that you could have not heard about this show. The show was consisted of mainly African-American characters with having simple plots, but had it's own unique comedy routine which was a huge hit for children at my age back then. The show was mainly filmed in Chicago which was a long way from the state I lived in, but for a new scene, they filmed an episode right near my house. I can still remember the excitement I felt when I got to see them in person for the first time in my life. One of their main characters Jaleel White, or in the show mainly known as "Steve Urkel", was my favorite character and he actually waved to me as he walked down the streets to the filming crew. That was the most exciting moment I ever had when I was a kid, but it wasn't over. After they had shooted the whole film in three days, they had some spare time left to stay at my neighborhood, so the filming crew decided to let the casts interview some people on how they thought about the show. I prayed the whole time hoping that they would pick me, and to my surprise, Jaleel White actually looked at me and said, "I remember you, do you want to take an interview?" This moment nerver left my head since I was overwhelmed with excitement and almost cried  because I was able to talk with my favorite TV show character in person. Although I had some other good memories as a kid, the time I met the characters of my favorite TV show outweighs any other moments from my childhood.

The Best City: Singapore

One of the cities that I want to live in is definitely Singapore. Singapore is situated in Southeast Asia, beneath Malaysia. It is a small country a little bit bigger than Seoul. Its capital Singapore can boast one of the best scenery in the world. It is situated next to a sea and there a lot of famous tall skyscrapers. Because Singapore is in Southeast Asia, it has tropical climate. It is always hot and it rains often. But this climate really suits to me because summer is the season that I like the most, and summer in Korea is humid and hot too. We can also enjoy various kinds of culture in Singapore since it was a vibrant base city for trade from the past and it was once a colony of England. So we can find out a lot of cultures mixed in a city. There is Arab Street famous for Arabic culture, Little India known for Indian culture, Hindu temple, mosque, China town, and Marina Bay which boasts modern architectures. And since it was a colony of England we can live without having linguistic problems if fluent in English. The price is not that different to Korea, but Singapore's is a bit expensive. Singapore is also known for its tidiness. We can't smoke in the city and can't spit on the road. If violated, huge fine would be charged. In these reasons, I picked Singapore the best city to live in.

My missing dog

I keep a dog for more than 10 years. Her name is Amelie and she's a precious family to me. Her breed is Cocker Spaniel, famous for ducking, so she always yearns for walk. One day, when I was about 15 years or so, my dog Amelie disappeared. I came back home from school, and unusually, my dog was not welcoming me. At first I had no regard. I thought she was having a nap under a bed or something else. But when my sister came back she said Amelie was missing. She said she came home and she forgot to close the door. She found out a few minutes later that Amelie was missing. My sister thought Amelie went out so she ran out home quickly to find the dog. But Ameile was nowhere. My sister guessed the way she would go and asked passersby if they saw a dog. Some people said that they did see a dog walking alone. So my sister hurried up to find the dog to the way people told her. However she could not find Amelie. She was embarrassed because the road before my home was always crowed with cars and my dog could easily hit by a car. Then she asked at security office situated at the gate of my neighbor apartment. Surprisingly the officer told that he did see a dog walking alone and according to him a car stopped and took my dog. He considered it strange so he took a memo of the car's license plate. So my sister took the memo and called the police to get the driver's telephone number. My sister and I got the number from the police and we called him. Fortunately the driver said he did take a dog because it seemed missing and he said it was Cocker Spaniel. So my parents went to take back Amelie. The first moment I knew my dog was missing I was really sad but thanks to the officer and the driver I could see my dog again safely.

Lee Sanghoon / How I met my best friend / Wed 11am

I met my best friend when I just entered high school. Our school had a kind of membership training before even an entrance ceremony. It was designed to let freshmen have a foggy idea on high school life in advance. We stayed 3 days in a training center, and there was a lot of time vacant as the schedule itself wasn't that tight. We didn't know each other, of course. But there was a ball, and a court, so we played basketball whenever it was available. I saw my best friend there for the first time. He was just one out of ten, players. He wore a cap, and his movement was rough, enough to associate a robot. His first impression was not that good. I didn't think he and I would make best friends as he looked too cool-headed. It's kind of ironical that we became intimate in earnest playing basketball about 6 months later, on one Sunday afternoon. We had hardly talked to each other since the very first meeting until then. Bored in a dorm room, he suggested me who was almost only one left in the dorm during the weekend to play basketball with him, and that made us the best friend. We wouldn't even know each other well without the day. And it's interesting that meeting him for the first time and being best friends both involve basketball. He doesn't still know I don't really enjoy basketball.

Joung Hwan Park / DRIVING IN SEOUL / Wed 11am

Driving in Seoul gives me headaches. I had been driving for five years when I got the chance to take my dad's car and drive from Suwon to Seoul to meet a friend. Since I had no problem with my driving, and was good with directions and fining places, I didn't have a single bit doubt that I'd have trouble driving around Seoul for the first time. With some of the way points locked in my head, I drove off and entered the highway with confidence. The highway is one of the easiest places to drive as long as you remember and don't miss your exit, because all you need to do is just drive straight most of the time. As I passed through two toll gates and an exit, I was actually in and driving around Seoul for the first time in my life. Now, I was trying my best to focus on driving as well as looking at road signs in order to get to my friend's place. The traffic wasn't so bad at that time of the evening, so I was quite surprised to see the opposite of what I imagined Seoul to be before leaving the house. I finally arrived at my friend's place and parked the car in the parking lot of his apartment. By the time I was done having a good time at my friend's place, it was around 10 o'clock, which meant that it was time for me to drive back to Suwon. Before leaving, I checked the map again for directions on my way back home to avoid taking a detour or getting lost in the middle of Seoul. On my way back, I had to go past Dongdemun and this when it all began. I realized that I was driving among a lot of cars and especially motorcycles with men delivering clothes and fabrics to the markets surrounding nearly the whole area of Dongdemun. Another thing that I noticed was that the traffic was moving real slow and this was because the combination of cars driving everywhere and motorcycles trying to squeeze their way through those busy cars. I was so shocked at the level of traffic jam this one little area was going through, and was slowly getting sick and tired of just waiting on the road where Dongdemun was a sea of vehicles. After taking two and a half hours to get home, I promised myself that I'd never drive around Seoul, especially the central areas, at nights and weekend where there was a possibility of getting stuck in between a huge traffic jam.

Enemy to friends

While I was in Romania, I lived in an apartment where only Korean people lived. It belonged to my father's workplace so my father's coworkers also lived there. They had children, and they were in the same age group with me so we were really close to each other. As a matter of fact, we Korean children were too thick with each other that we didn't try to make native friends. We thought we were different with them, and as a childish mind we thought they were poor and dirty so that we looked down on them. And finally they got mad to us. We, about 6 children, had a big fight with some of neighborhood native children. As we were all about elementary aged children, fortunately no one got seriously injured. However some cried and some got bruise on the body. Eventually the war was over, and nobody was the winner. We couldn't know the reason for the fight, and also the reason why we looked down on them. They were just the same innocent young children, and in fact they even wanted to be friends of us. We felt shameful and sorry for them. We regretted and apologized to them, asking to be friends. They also apologized to start fighting and gladly became friends of us. After the fight we became good friends and played soccer together or come over to each other's house. As I was very young, honestly I cannot remember each of them. But one thing I can confidently say is that it was a valuable experience to me, and it was one of the most painful but also happiest memories in my life.

Kim Seong Yeol / Are pets good companions? / Wed 11a.m.

Last week's homework.

Sorry to be late...

Pets are good companions

I think that pets are definitely good companions. They can be a good friend for us and make us not lonely or bored. People feel lazy and meaningless when they have nothing to do. However if there is a pet we have things to do to care them, such as feeding them of washing them, or even training them. Sometimes these might be bothering and hard, but still it's a good way to prevent passing meaningless time. Also giving them love makes people feel happy and relieved. I heard that people have hidden desire to give one-sided love to something. Love between humans is interactive and that is a natural thing, but such love can cause stress unconsciously and that cannot satisfy our desire fully. Pets help us to satisfy it. Love giving to pets is unconditional and one-sided so that it makes people feel comfortable. So pets can be very good companions to us.

Sehee Hwang/A Special Memory From My Chidhood/Wed 11AM

Sitting Down On The Couch While Sleeping

When I was in elementary school I used to love playing soccer. I spent most of my break times on playing soccer outside but I had to stop playing soccer for 10 days because of an accident. One day, I was playing soccer with my friends as always. It was lunch break so there were hundreds of kids playing on the ground. There were more than 20 balls rolling on the ground. It was like a chaos so I had to look for the ball among those kids. Finally, I found my ball and I was running toward it and suddenly, I saw another ball flying toward me in a split second. It hit my right eye so hard and I felt the pain coming to my eye. It was very painful so I had to cover my face with my hands. The kid who kicked the ball came to me and said sorry. He didn't see me coming becase it was such a mess. After the pain was gone, I looked up the sky and it was very weird. The sky was yellow and I couldn't see it clearly. I was so scared because I thought I might lose my sight. I ran to the nurse's office immediately and the nurse said I needed to go to the hospital. In the hospital, the doctor diagnosed me and said there was bleeding inside my eye. Fortunately, there was no problem with my eye sight. However, he said it would take some time until the bleeding stops and settles down. He said if I move, the blood would spread inside my eye again so I had to sit down and do nothing. Even when I am sleeping, I had to sit down. I did it for 10 days. It was a nightmare. I can tell this special memory with a laugh now but at that time, it was the longest and most uncomfortable 10 days in my life.

Unforgettable Experience on the Bus

I went travel to Suzhou, China with my aunt 5 months ago. The things I remember the most of it was how I got to Suzhou. It is about a bus my aunt and I took to reach our destination. The bus was unforgettable. I have never seen this kind of bus in my life. It was a bed-bus which had size of two-story bus and contained about 30 beds. It was good transportation for us because we had to take bus for 12 hours, 5 pm~5 am, to get to Suzhou. So I did not have to suffer from sitting on the seat for half a day. I spend most of hours on sleeping and watching movies. An hour before we reached our destination, I sensed that something was wrong. My aunt was talking with the driver, and she looked confused. I asked her what was going on and she said that the driver is going to drop us in the middle of highway. We knew before we took the bus that we had to get off the bus because the destination of the bus was not Suzhou. The bus was on the way to Hangzhou via Suzhou. So we thought that the bus was going to stop at the bus station in Suzhou. But instead, we were standing there, middle of highway near expressway rest area around 4 am. And the worst thing was that it was raining and we did not have umbrella with us. But luckily, there were two other passengers who got off from the same bus and they offered us a ride. They had a friend with a car waiting for them. Thanks to them, we did not have to shiver with cold and got to our hotel safely.

Valuable Challenge; Volunteering

Hyejin Kim

I have read many books since childhood thanks to my mother who encouraged me to learn true knowledge through reading books. Especially, I liked the autography of Biya Han who is a famous aid worker in Korea. She taught me there are millions of people who need other's help and I can be the one who volunteers for whole world in my own way. In spring semester, 2010, I started volunteer work for young students. I taught Science to middle school students and also studied science every week and had meeting with other teachers to teach them in much easier way. I participated in making our own Science textbook with other teachers for students, too. I would face many barriers to interact with each student, because I could not understand what they were feeling and they also did not understand why I reacted in that way. As time goes by, I realized that I kept enforcing them to do in the way I easily took control them without changing myself. And then, I tried to understand them sincerely and changed my way to act. After three months, my volunteering period ended. At the last day, my students wrote letters for me, took picture of me, and promised to study hard. They taught how to communicate with others to me, while I taught Science to them.

Young in, Lee/ A man with a knife. / Wed(11am)

A man with a knife.

Have you seen the murder case in directly? I didn't sure the case that I saw is murder or not, But I could not forget the scene I see. In 2009 summer, I was in the china. My Chinese friends called me there house, so I and my friends went to the china. First place where we went was Qingdao, it was famous for beer. But the case was happened in Changsha. I and other Chinese guys went to the club and we went out for more drinks and we were in a narrow alley for eating famous grilled skewer. We were all drunk and the time was around 1a.m. The alley's lighting was not bright enough and streetlamp gave light weekly, so the color of there was like a light red. And there were so few people around us and the sounds like Chinese song came to my ears. Then I saw a man put a hundred meter, and he was holding like a stick. He looked that urged by someone, and in the road after he went over, some water trace was spread. I could not notice what that is because it was same with a color of the lightness, Red. It was blood. And after around five steps over to me, one man collapsed in the street. The victim's bleeding continuously and the blood wet his body. There was no moving on him. I felt some of an intense fear of seeing his body. Also there was no sound in there, The Chinese song was sure to play nearby there, I could not catch it. I couldn't hear anything. And my friends, few people in the alleys were in the deep silence. Then some woman started to cry out and the man with a knife still ran away. I saw my friend's eyes there was only fear, other emotion was not existed. After I noticed that I was not the only person who feels the fear, I could hear some sounds. I and my friends decided to get out of there. We should cancel the plans which drink more beer.

How I Met My Best Friend

When I was 12 years old, I met my best friend for the first time. While I was walking in the hallway, there was a person who was walking toward me. She wore the same clothes so I couldn't help but recognize her. She also looked at me weirdly and we just said hello only for the reason we wore the same clothes even though we didn't know each other. It was really unusual experience so I laughed off and forgot about her. Then a few days later, I went to the church because of my mother's continual nagging. After attending mass, there was a Catholic doctrine class for young students and I took it for the first time. There were about 20 students in the class I felt really awkward. Teacher said get the textbook out but I didn't bring anything because I didn't even know there was a class. Teacher said look at the textbook with a student sitting way in the back then I saw her, I noticed she was the girl who I met in the hallway. I already felt like she was my best friend even if I didn't know her name. However, we just said hello and took the class without saying anything. I didn't even ask what her name was or which class she took. I thought it was odd and smiled away again. Then when I reached 13, the new semester started. I didn't know anyone but my new classmates seemed very nice. And there was her, the one who I met in the hallway firstly, and in the church for the second time. I felt funny and weird but approached her and eventually said "Hi, I'm Geun-Hong. What's your name?" Then we became best friends and ten years have passed since then, we are still best friends.

Min Ho Jung/ Childhood Memory/ Wed 11AM

My Childhood Memories

201101227 Min Ho Jung

When someone asks about my special childhood memory, my mind immediately goes to the time I spent in Michigan. Among the countless stories I can remember, the ones that linger longer than other are the ones that I had with my family and our friends. The friends I am referring to are my dad's friends and their family. There are three other families, and all our dads met when they went to University together. We spent most of our Summer and Winter vacations with them and would gather together once in a week. Among the various trips we went on, the most memorable one is the last Christmas all of us spent together. We went to the usual place we go during Winter break, rented a condo and went skiing together. It was nothing much different from our usual trips; we skied, had our snowball fights, rode down the high hill on our sleds, ate delicious food from the restaurant, drank hot chocolate in front of the fire place, went into the hot tub and stayed up all night talking. In the morning we will discover presents in the stockings and under the Christmas tree; nothing different from your usual Christmas. Nevertheless, what made it special for me was that I knew it would be my last holiday I would be spending with my friends, and the fact that it felt so warm and cozy to be with them made me sad. When I had to say good bye to them, I felt as if someone punched me hard. It truly broke my heart, and was one of the hardest things I had to do. Despite the fact we haven't seen them for a long time, I know that this special memory will be in my head and will always be cherished.

Miyeon Kim / The most nervous interview / Wed 11 AM

The most nervous interview in my life

200900368

Miyeon Kim

Before entering HUFS, I had to do lots of things such as taking the scholastic aptitude test and the college essay test, and undergoing interview. I remember that the first two processes were really hard, but the last one, the interview with teaching staff, was the most difficult course. Just before I entered testing room, I was waiting in the hall. And when my name was called, I sat in front of professors having lots of mixed emotions. The first task was reading English text and answering the related questions. Other student might know about the English test, but I didn't have any information. I was so embarrassed and thought many things in few seconds - how can I give them right answer? Fortunately, the text was a short story of a girl and her mother, so I could understand what it was. The next one was current topics. The teaching staff asked me few questions, like "what do you think of multiculturalism?" I swallowed hard because I have not thought about that. There was a silence for a while. I asked for time to think. Then, I swallowed hard again and give them an answer. Lastly, they ask me to explain my vision and dream. I mentioned it shortly and I went out of the room. After finishing all questions, I couldn't feel my legs. After a few weeks, I was luckily accept by HUFS, and now I am studying at this college. Interviewing gave me a hard time, but it was really worthwhile. And moreover, thanks to experience of having interview, I could pass other club interviews quite easily!

Hyung-Il Kim / national college entrance exam / wed 11a.m.

One of the big challenge that I faced was the national college entrance exam. When I was 20 years old, on November, I went to the Sang-Il high school for my national college entrance exam. Before the exam was started, I feel very nervous because it might be my last opportunity. The first subject was Korean language. At first, I concentrated on the questions and solved them calmly. I felt so good and I thought it's my face. However, when I faced with tricky text, I suddenly felt nervous and became confused. Moreover, I noticed that I wasted too much time and I felt more confusion. After the Korean exam, I felt very dispirited. I even thought about going home now and give up other subjects. With this mental state, the math exam was started and I just solved the questions phlegmatically. After math exam, I ate lunch and was able to cheer up myself so I could do well in the other subjects. But I thought that I can't go good university because I spoiled Korean and math. After few month later, when I checked my score, I found that my Korean score was much better than I expected. I felt sorry that if I didn't be confuse by Korean, I could get better score in math too. I still regret that I made hasty conclusion about Korean score.
