Hyejin Kim/My Life/Wed 11am

My Life until Now

I have two faces like Janus. I am really enthusiastic when I am doing what I like to do. On the other hand, I am indifferent to what I do not want to do. This is my strong and weak points, I think. Since I was 13 years old, I have been interested in Japanese culture. So I decided to learn Japanese by myself, and started to watch Japanese dramas. Since then, I have watched about one hundred of Japanese dramas and now I speak Japanese fluently. I also learned Japanese custom, life style, and so on. It helped me to broaden perspectives on other countries. As I grow older, however, I have learned that I am not able to keep doing what I love to do.

Becoming a college student, I was extremely frustrated due to new circumstance. I had dreamed exciting college life which is filled with what I wish to do and what I want to be. Experiencing 'real' college life, I realized that it is quite different from what I imagined. I was highly nervous in class. All the courses for my major are taught in English. But I was poor at listening and speaking English. As I took economics course, it was first time to take every class in English and I had never learned economics before. So, every economics class was like a hell that I cannot hear anything, understand anything. I just kept falling behind other students. I was nearly in panic and didn't know what to do. I wanted to be comforted, however, there was no friend and family who are strongly supported me in hometown. In that time, positive perspective and adaptability made me overcome those situations and cheered me up. Therefore, I believe I can make up for my weakness with other strong points.

  1. Your dividing your strong points and weak points into two paragraphs is great. And the collaboration between the topic sentences and the supporting sentences is excellent.
Some points I think you could make up are: It would be better to make it sure what your major is with mentioning yours. And as you talked about the specific difficulties you faced, it would be great to tell how you overcome them in more detailed way.

  2. What I like about this piece of writing is your frankness. Because it is difficult to know and reveal your strength and weakness.

These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:

Experiencing 'real' college life, I realized that it is quite different from what I imagined. - Most of the circumstances we meet are different from what we imagined. But your attitude and effort to overcome are good.

there was no friend and family who are strongly supported me in hometown. - I understand how you stands because I am also away from home for studying.

Some things aren't clear to me:
As I took economics course, it was first time to take every class in English and I had never learned economics before. - Why do you have to take economics class? Is that your major? I thnk it needs some improving.

All the courses for my major, International Studies, are taught in English. But I was poor at listening and speaking English. As I took economics course which is one of the compulsory courses, it was first time to take every class in English and I had never learned economics before. So, every economics class was like a hell that I cannot hear anything, understand anything. I just kept falling behind other students. I was nearly in panic and didn't know what to do. Although I am still struggling to improve my English, I believe I can make up for my weakness with other strong points.
