Sense of place

-Seondol, Yeongwol-gun

Last winter my friend and I went to Yeongwol to refresh ourselves. I recommend traveling Yeongwol-gun, a tranquil town in Kangwon-do, because it has many tourist spots such as an observatory, Cheongnyeongpo, Seondol and so on. Among those sights, the most memorable experience was a way to Seondol.

The distance between each tourist attractions was so far but we had not enough money to take a taxi. There are few buses, so we could not help just walking when we went to Seondol. Although we walked and walked shivering with cold, there was no a direction board of Seondol at all. Luckily we could find out a fire station and asked how far our destination was. Saying "You can't go there without car", at our surprise, one fireman picked us up on a fire truck! The truck rattled over the rough ground and I felt like riding the rides in an amusement park.

Thanks to kindness of a fireman, it was fresher to look around Seondol. Seondol was huge rock about 70 meters high. As its meaning 'standing stone', it stood tall by the river. When we arrived at this place, we first strolled the path with a lot of trees. It smelled rotten leaves, which made us feel refreshed and pleasant. There was a small viewing platform. Viewing at this platform, we looked at magnificent Seondol on our leftside. The river wound its way between Seondol and small village located at the round ground. At that time the river was frozen covered with snow. Golden sunlight made white frozen river glittering at sunset. Even though it was cold and we heard shaking and vibrating sound of trees because of strong wind, the view of Seondol was really romantic and breathtaking.

During the short overnight trip, we took buses, trains, bicycles and even hitchhiked. Of course the best was a fire truck. Thanks to this precious experience, we enjoyed sightseeing. If my friends make a journey to Yeongwol, I will specially describe how memorable surrounding scenery of Seondol was.

  1. I liked the way you wrote your essay by following the journey. Also your description about Seondol was so detailed that I could easily draw in my head. I want to visit there someday. But I thought the introduction was a bit long. If you focused more about the description, it could be much better.

  2. I think you focused on the way to get to the place. It is very interesting, especially the 'fire man' episode. In my opinion, it would be better if there was more detailed description about the place. For example, you said the rotten leaves smell made you feel refreshed and pleasant. I can't exactly imagine how that feels. Except for that, the story is very fun and interesting.

Stepping on rustling fallen leaves, we met a small place where visitors view Seondol easily. On this small platform, we looked at magnificent Seondol on our leftside. The river wound its way between Seondol and small, round village located in the middle. At that time the river was frozen covered with snow. Golden sunlight made white frozen river glittering at sunset. Thanks to sunset, it seemed like that all things around us glowed orange gold. Many leaves of evergreen trees mad rustling sound trembling in the wind. Some birds chirped on trees. Even though it was cold to bone, the view of Seondol was really romantic and peaceful.
