My Favorite Relative

201101227 Min Ho Jung

My favorite relative is my cousin who is five years older than me, and liked by everyone. We have a special bond that was formed when we were young. I was six years old, and had recently returned from the States with no friends to rely on. In addition, my younger sister came out into the world so I felt truly alone. My cousin stepped in to fill that hole in my life. My mother would often drop me off at my cousin's house when she was busy, or when I asked her to. My cousin was like a sister to me. She would take me to places I have never been to and was skilled at making me laugh. She gradually helped me open my heart again: to my parents and friends. While we were like sisters, we also had our fights. There was a time when she and I got into a huge fight. It is a blurry memory to me, but I can remember that we were grabbing each other's hair and screaming. My aunt burst into the room with wide eyes and tore us apart. We were a mess with frizzy hair, red faces and scars. Nevertheless, these fights were what made our relationship more special. We were truly like sisters who had good times and bad times. I could go to her whenever I had a problem, and she would come to me to talk about the things that went on in her life. We have grown so much from the days we were little girls with matching ponytails, and now have less time to spend together. It's sometimes sad to think we can never be close as we were when we were young and less preoccupied with our lives, but I am thankful that I have a cousin who has been there for me during my difficult times.
