Sense of Place

201101227 Min Ho Jung

This used to be one of my favorite places during Spring and Summer time. When I step in, the first thing I notice is the steady breeze that hits me full in the face whenever I go there. Whether the sun is blazing or the sky is filled with clouds, the breeze is always there like a greeting post to welcome me. I have a habit of taking off my shoes and when I do, I feel the rough dirt and stones underneath my foot and the grass grazing my toes. As I take several steps, the soft smell of grass and dirt flows into my nose. I also catch the scent of floral in the breeze that makes me tingle. Then I lie on the grass and stay still to hear the winds softly blowing, the leaves rustling and the birds chirping, which soothes me. I especially enjoy the rhythmic sound of the stream flowing nearby. I sometimes feel that I can taste the mildness of the water and the bitterness of the leaves. During Summer time, I often taste the dry air that makes my mouth chap. Most of all, I enjoy the moment when the grass is healthy green, and the sun is up in the sky shining on the scenery. I love the way the trees are positioned to look as if it is enveloping me, and the way the clear water sparkles and circles the land. This is the reason I loved this grassy land back in my childhood, and I can still picture it clearly in my mind even though it has been years since I was able to visit it.

  1. There are no name(title?) of place that you explain in essay's early part. So, I didn't know what you explain until I noticed that you said about 'grassy land back in your childhood' in last part of your essay.
But I could feel the sense of place you were explaining from first part of the essay. Because your expression about the place and words that you choose to express your feeling is so great. Your words are explaining the exact feeling of the place through five sense that people can feel, the sense of sight, touch, smell, hearing, even touch!! Especially, I love your expression on sense of touch of the place. I can experience what you felt in that place even in my room!!
